Arc Burn asked:
Wouldn’t the compasionate thing to do would be to buy buckets of chicken and pass them out to the hungry and homeless. Are chickens more important to these people than fellow human beings??
zOmbina: I understand what you are saying. But, everyone has the option of making their own priorities and these people have made theirs chickens. It just seems cruel to me. I have watched it happen near where I live and I do support the homeless by donating food.

Eh.
Wrong place to post.
Most V&V users aren’t all the supportive of PETA so you’ll probably get agreement or anger at being grouped together with PETA supporters.
You might find a couple answer, but there aint that many on here.

dude frankly i dont know if u r a chicken-aholic or a PETA hater…but yea, if taken in a serious kinda way what u r saying is true…what would chickens do if there were no healthy people to feed them??!!

Raw is right, not all vegetarians and vegans are PETA fanatics. I have never had a problem giving a homeless person spare change or loose dollar bills. I am not responsible for what he or she buys with the money but do give them an opportunity to buy themselves a meal.

I really don’t think there’s ever been an instance of PETA holding a proest outside a KFC that just happened to be in an area where there are a lot of homeless people in the immediate area to purposefully say “we’re not buying you chicken…”
You really can’t make a statement like that, it’s not fair. It’s like saying people who spend their time caring for elderly people don’t care about children. They very well may. But thats not where they’re spending their time, and everyone can’t take care of every problem at once.
And I think in most veg*ns eyes, the most compassionate thing to do for ALL creatures would be to buy some fresh produce for these homeless people so they can get some real substance instead of fried junk food. I really don’t see how thats unreasonable.
LOL @ trolls. Yes, troll, PETA is the reason for our conflicts with the Islam world. That makes a lot of sense!
Nobody says someone who supports animals can’t also support humans. Who’s to say some of these people don’t spend time working with humans as well as animals? I donate money to homeless, myself. Granted, not very much, but I’m a teenager, I don’t have very much. You can’t assume that these people don’t have other issues they’re concerned about.

PETA supporters are usually very blinded by the suffering of humans. The ones I know are in the belief that humans have the ability to help themselves but animals don’t. Tell that to a hungry child. I don’t watch the Animal Planet as more compassion and help is given to animals than humans. Animals don’t have a soul so if they are put to sleep so what? I do believe that if you own a pet you should take care of it and people should go to jail for animal cruelty.
If abortions were performed on animals PETA would be picketing all over the planet. Abortions on humans seem to be okay if the child is unwanted. No wonder Muslims believe Americans are evil.

Because peta people are ridiculous morons and their priorities are all out of whack. They want to change the name “fish” to “kitten” so people will stop fishing. Complete stupidity. I have stopped eating tuna fish b/c of these people. I miss the flavorful taste of dolphin with my tuna, ah..so succulent! I protest this whenever I can.

Two totally unrelated issues. Well, not entirely unrelated. If more resources were used to grow grains and vegetables instead of meat (like chickens) more hungry people could be fed. At least these protesters are trying to do some good. Helping one cause is better than doing nothing at all.

Animals can’t speak up for themselves and have no control over what a human does to them. If a person is homeless, sad but true, they messed up along the way one time or another to get themselves into that situation. I’m sure peta cares about the homeless.. they just want them to eat salads instead of meat lol.

Umm because everyone is aware of the problems human beings have. However most are not aware of where their food comes from. Therefore, they hold these protests and demonstrations to show people the truth. I support this very much.

I am a vegetarian (well technically pescitarian, i eat wild caught fish) I am also a member a PETA and support a lot of the things that they do. However just because I support PETA does not mean i don’t support the homeless as well. I’m not a fan of giving out money but I do give food like bars that I keep in my car and where I live you can hand out a slip of paper that can get them a free meal. I also have a sponsor child in Brazil and we write letters to each other. I try to support the animals, the local impoverished people and the impoverished in other countries. I am still in High School and don’t make $300 a month. I am hoping to take a year off and spend a year in western Kenya to help with drought relief. The only other thing I do to to help animals besides eating them is volunteer at the local shelter. I think that it is rude to assume just because some one does not eat meat and is a PETA member they don’t care about the people. a lot of people have told me that because I am still in high school I can not make a difference but I think that I can by helping people and animals alike.

Are there really hungry and homeless people around? Each month, the United States government assists more than 28 million poor people to buy food through, through food stamps. Furthermore, charity organizations such as the Salvation Army endeavor to help the less fortunate. This demonstrates that there are official government and charitable channels that work to aid those truly in need of proper nourishment. Additionally, there are soup kitchens and homeless shelters for the homeless. People really care about the plight of the homeless, but many homeless people have physical and mental difficulties that make it impossible for them to get jobs or live traditional lifestyles. Therefore there are many agencies and organizations that support homelessness. If you have a magic bullet to stop the epidemic of poverty, the world would like to know. But giving at random to homeless people does not always encourage an overall improvement to their lives. If you give a man a fish, you have helped him become less self-sufficient. Not until you give him a fishingpole and teach him to fish have you done anything valuable for society.
There are two sins here: ignoring human suffering and ignoring the suffering of any of God’s creatures that you may consider different or inferior. Though you may judge one of those sins worse and one of them lesser, if you condemn the ones who have sought to reduce the lesser sin yet you have raised no hand in the prevention of either of these troubles, it may be you who can do more. PETA supporters also support other charities. Don’t believe that you have helped the hungry and homeless more than the PETA supporters just because you don’t empathize with trying to stop cruelty to living beings that are not human.
By the way, PETA considers humans under the umbrella of the term animals, so it is also opposed to unethical treatment of humans. PETA gets many coats donated that were made from the skin and fur of animals killed for their pelts–PETA gives some of those fur coats to the homeless to keep them warm in winter.
In closing, relying on PETA supporters for your food source is not an alternative! And unethical treatment of animals is not cool.

To put it bluntly,
I do not care about the suffering of any human in comparison to how I feel about suffering animals. Theirs is a far bigger issue.

Shouldn’t your question be: “How can hungry obese patrons eat at KFC, while ignoring the hungry and homeless passing in front of them.?”
And no offence, i’m a vegetarian (that doesn’t drink milk or eat eggs), but protesting outside on KFC of millions isn’t going to do much. PETA need to do something significant! How about, protesting outside the chicken factories themselves! It’s not KFC chopping the heads of chickens. What about Red Rooster or McD’s ?
Anyways, my point is,
Have you ever given buckets of chicken away to the homeless and poor, if not, you’re just as bad as those protestestors =)

Because it’s a free country and everybody isn’t going to agree on what issues they think are worthy.
I thought those people in Boston throwing tea bags were ridiculous but that doesn’t stop them from doing it.
Besides, how do you know if the people protesting KFC aren’t involved in other issues (such as homelessness) when they aren’t doing that? Seeing a bunch of people at one time or other couldn’t possibly give you enough information for you to know everything about them.
Also, why isn’t the restaurant giving away free food to the homeless? Isn’t that “cruel?”
5:33 am - January 16th, 2009
You must have a very fast car and a lot of time on your hands! You have been present at every single KFC protest and, every single time, the protesters ignored the homeless people walking in front of them? Or are you just grossly generalizing? Until you’ve seen this happen at every single KFC protest from now until the end of time, keep your mouth shut.
12:13 pm - January 17th, 2009
False dilemma; there are other options besides buy KFC or starve the homeless. Have you heard of Food Not Bombs? They serve free food and it’s all veg.
