The purpose of a sub woofer is to get the thumping and rattling BASS from your system. If you install the sub woofer and conect it to the head unit, you will get sound but no BASS. The subwoofer normally has a cross over and will only accept frequencies in the low range of 25 to 150Hz or so. Without a sub amp. you will hear very little and it would be a waste to do that. Match the sub amp and the sub speaker for maximum effect.

Absolutely pointless to have a subwoofer and no amp. Might as well hook your sub to your tail lights.
